Editing & Proofreading

Developmental Editing

Fiction per word: 3.0–4.0¢  

Nonfiction per word: 4.0–5.0¢  

  • Assesses the overall structure and organization of a manuscript.

  • Provides detailed feedback about voice and style with recommendations about how to improve overall flow.

  • Does not include detailed copyediting or proofreading.

  • Ideal for manuscripts that need a nudge in the right direction, writers who are overwhelmed, or drafts that are in their early stages.

Line Editing

Academic editing per word: 4.0–5.0¢ 

Fiction per word: 2.5–4.0¢

Nonfiction per word: 3.5–5.0¢

  • Editing at the sentence level for clarity, flow, and syntax. May involve heavy rewriting in certain places.

Copyediting

Fiction per word: 2.0–3.0¢ 

Nonfiction per word: 3.0–4.0¢  

  • Corrects grammar, punctuation, syntax, and consistency. Does include a great deal of sentence reconstruction or rewriting.

Proofreading

Fiction per word: 1.2–2.0¢ 

Nonfiction per word: 2.0–3.0¢ 

  • Fine tunes sentence structure, including grammatical errors, for a polished finished product.

  • Ensures all punctuation, formatting, and spelling errors are corrected.
